Border crossing: who is allowed to enter Hungary and for what reason?
Hungarian Foreign Minister László Szijjártó shared on Facebook how border crossing rules are changing for Hungary. Since Wednesday midnight (06.17.), EU citizens and citizens of Serbia, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland can enter the country without mandatory quarantine.
Index reports that both Hungarian citizens and their non-Hungarian relatives coming home from the above-mentioned countries no longer have to stay in self-quarantine. From now on, people from most European Economy Area (EEA) countries are also free from any restrictions.
If you are not a citizen of the European Union or of Serbia, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Iceland (or if you are a Hungarian coming home from somewhere other than these countries), you can still enter the country if you obtain a special permit, which can be requested in the following cases:
- to attend court or other official proceedings
- to attend official business (verified by the local or state government)
- to access healthcare services
- to attend an exam or if you have other educational obligations (verified by the educational institution)
- to carry out transportation services (verified by the employer)
- to attend family affairs (weddings, funerals, etc.)
- to care for a relative
- to attend an international sporting, cultural, or religious event
- if one has any other legitimate reason for entering the country.
If you have a permit, in all cases, you are obligated to attend a health examination upon arrival. If you show no coronavirus symptoms, you may enter Hungary, but you still need to quarantine yourself for 14 days. In the case that you do show any coronavirus symptoms, you will be banned from entering the country.

What about transit flight? Can we Enter airport for transfer without being citizen of the EU?
You didn’t mention that UK citizens aren’t allowed
It would be great to know who decides what a “legitimate reason” means.
I want to drive to eger Hungary, to see my daughter as I could not see her for her birthday back in April. Other wise it could be December or sometime next year if people from the uk are still not allowed.
It would be great if I can over with any problems.
